Eyeglass Examinations
Eyeglass examinations serve more purpose than just to provide a prescription for a new pair of glasses. Vision screening allows the doctor to assess the health of the eyes and find any problems that need to be addressed before they become more severe. If the doctor determines the need for a more in-depth look, the pupils can be dilated.
During an eyeglass examination, the clarity of your reading and vision distance is tested as well as peripheral vision (side vision). The fluid pressure inside the eyes is tested, and the doctor looks at all the external areas of the eyes.
Before the actual exam, a medical and health history is obtained. Overall health, allergies, family health, current medication list, and the current conditions of known medical issues are important to eye health.
Eye examinations should be obtained yearly to check for vision changes and to monitor for complications in diabetic patients. Annual eye exams should begin in childhood, especially when starting school. Vision problems will affect learning performance and achievements in extracurricular activities. Specialized eye care and prompt treatment will keep good vision throughout adulthood.
